Don’t Let Blood-Borne Viruses Give You a Fright This Halloween

When we think of Halloween, one creature always springs to mind – Vampires! These spooky characters are infamous for their love of blood, but in real life, blood isn’t something to take lightly. Unlike the legend, blood can carry serious viruses such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV, all transmitted through blood-to-blood contact. So, while vampires might be fictional (thank goodness!) the threats posed by blood-borne viruses (BBVs) are very real. That said, there’s one myth we can finally bust in true Halloween spirit: you can’t get a hepatitis virus from a mosquito bite, though a vampire might just manage it!

What are Blood-Borne Viruses?

Blood-borne viruses are real, not mythical, they aren’t transmitted through the air or by insect bites but through direct blood-to-blood contact, such as:

  • Sharing needles, syringes or other injecting equipment: one of the most common ways hepatitis B and C are spread
  • Using unsterile tattoo or piercing equipment: if equipment hasn’t been properly sterilised, even a small amount of blood can pass on infection
  • Mother-to-child transmission during birth: hepatitis B can be passed from parent to baby without proper prevention steps
  • Sharing personal items that may have blood on them: like razors, toothbrushes, or nail clippers
  • Needle-stick injuries: common in healthcare and community work if protective measures aren’t in place
  • Unprotected sex with someone who has a BBV: particularly for hepatitis B and HIV, which can be transmitted through both blood and some bodily fluids

Unlike Vampires, people don’t need to fear every drop of blood however understanding how BBVs are transmitted is vital, the good news is that prevention is simple and effective, including:

  • Regular testing for hepatitis B and C: early detection saves lives and prevents liver damage
  • Vaccination for hepatitis B: a safe and effective vaccine offers lifelong protection
  • Safe injection practices: always use sterile equipment and avoid sharing
  • Proper sterilisation: ensuring all tattoo, piercing, or medical equipment is professionally cleaned
  • Safe sex practices: including the use of condoms to lower risk

By knowing how BBVs are spread and how they’re not we can focus on prevention and protect our liver health.

A Halloween Reminder with a Serious Bite

Dracula may make us shiver, but this spooky season gives us a chance to shine a light on liver health and BBV awareness. Hepatitis B and C in particular can lead to serious liver damage if left untreated, yet both are manageable thanks to powerful antiviral treatments and a cure for Hep C, livers can be protected.

So this Halloween remember, while vampires may live forever, our livers don’t. Protect yours by getting tested, vaccinated and practicing safe habits. No magical garlic or stakes needed!
